The laboratory immediately concluded that the cloth and the mummy were fakes. The very idea of a cloth covering the face of a corpse with blood coming out of its nose and mouth would have horrified all concerned. What makes the Sudarium so interesting, however, is the recent discovery that both the Sudarium of Oviedo and the Shroud of Turin are physically linked.
On the Shroud there are also traces of pollen from Syria, Turkey, Greece and France, revealing a completely different route. If the Shroud is a fake, then the Sudarium must also be so.
Tests have shown that the man whose face the Sudarium covered, like the man of the Shroud, had a beard, moustache and long hair tied up at the nape of his neck into a pigtail. There is no image upon the Sudarium, and so to the naked eye it is a small cloth with some stains of blood and water. The link between the Sudarium and the Shroud however, pre crisis brainiac dating casts major doubt over the accuracy of the carbon dating result.
How good is the match up between the Sudarium and the Shroud?
The Shroud of Turin has always attracted more attention due to the image formed upon the shroud of a crucified man. The Palestines in Greek-Roman times were generally provided with handkerchiefs in a fashion originating in Rome, where the name of these napkins became soudarion and the Latin sudarium.
This form of pollen analysis is performed initially by applying sticky tape to the cloth in question. The Sudarium of Oviedo is not commonly known or discussed.
